The intervertebral fusion cage is a large, hollow cylinder made of high-quality materials, typically titanium or PEEK. It is designed as a "cage" so that bone graft can be placed inside the hollow cylinder to allow a spinal fusion to occur between two vertebrae. The holes throughout the cage allow bone to form around and through the cage, connecting the two vertebrae with solid bone.
Modern intervertebral fusion cages are versatile, allowing for spinal fusion via traditional open incisions or advanced laparoscopic procedures. A laparoscopic approach utilizes smaller incisions and a specialized camera, potentially reducing damage to normal tissue and accelerating recovery times.

The cage is designed to spread two vertebrae apart, enlarging the nerve root openings and reducing nerve pinching. It tightens surrounding ligaments to decrease segmental instability and mechanical pain. The device effectively replaces the disc and maintains correct positioning until fusion is complete.
